As a Cognitive Hypnotherapist I help clients make changes in two ways. First, we explore the "cognitions" (i.e. thoughts and processes a client may be aware of) which may be contributing to their problem. Second, we explore the unconscious processes (those a client is not aware of) which may, also, be contributing to their problem.
When working at a conscious level I provide my clients with a range of tools they can use "in the moment", for example, when feeling anxious. Having tools is empowering, because they provide a client with something to do, which, in turn, may assist them in taking control of the situation.
One tool I teach is the 7-11 breath. This requires an inhale for the count of 7 and an exhale for the count of 11. You'll notice that the exhale is longer than the inhale. This is important as it changes the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body, which sends a signal to the nervous system that all is well, and results in the body calming down.
This is a highly effective tool. I suggest using it as much as possible - trying it out when you are not feeling anxious. Then the next time you start to feel anxiety rising, it'll be easier to tap into this way of breathing. Give it a try...it might just be the difference which makes the difference by providing you with that, often, much needed moment of calm.
